01 / THE IDEA

Decision traceability logging in practice.

Decision traceability logging captures the inputs, model outputs and supporting explanation artefacts needed for later audit and review. Useful issues include stable explanation metrics, storage and provenance, and privacy-aware retention policies.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: an audit pipeline that stores each prediction with inputs, versioned model ID, and per-decision importance scores so compliance teams can inspect and replay historical decisions. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a decision traceability logging system project
step by step.

01

Define the trace schema

Decide which fields to store per decision (timestamp, inputs, model version, explanation vectors, confidence) and how long to retain them.

02

Build a baseline model

Train a reproducible classifier on representative tabular data and record the exact training configuration and model artefact.

03

Attach explanations

Produce per-decision explanation artefacts (for example SHAP values or permutation importance) and store them alongside the prediction.

04

Evaluate and monitor

Monitor explanation stability, calibration and drift; provide an interface for human reviewers to query traces and flag errors.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the decision traceability logging system starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates a synthetic classification dataset (make_classification), trains a RandomForestClassifier, computes permutation_importance on the test set, and prints test accuracy and the top features. It does not implement a decision-logging system, model versioning, per-decision explanation records, or persistent audit storage.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
X, y = make_classification(n_samples=700, n_features=8, n_informative=5, random_state=42)
columns = [f"feature_{i}" for i in range(X.shape[1])]
X = pd.DataFrame(X, columns=columns)

X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y, test_size=0.25, random_state=42, stratify=y)
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=42)
Important limitation

The code uses synthetic data and only computes global permutation importance on a held-out test set. It does not record per-decision inputs, predictions, timestamps, model metadata, or persistent logs; it also does not compute local explanations (for example SHAP values) or provide an audit API or storage layer.

04 / BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Where a decision traceability logging system project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Audit-ready decision traces

A proposed extension: produce and persist one-row decision traces for each prediction containing input features, model version, predicted label and a local explanation vector (SHAP), and add an API/dashboard to query and replay traces for compliance review.

WHO IT COULD SERVERisk and compliance teams
FIRST MVPA minimal pipeline that trains a model, emits a JSON trace per prediction (inputs, model id, prediction, probability, local SHAP vector, timestamp) and stores traces in a queryable store.
KEY RISKTrace data can include personal or sensitive inputs; enforce access controls, minimisation and retention policies. Decision traces should support human review and not be used as sole grounds for automated punitive actions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a decision traceability logging system project puts on your resume.

  • Generate a reproducible tabular classification baseline using scikit-learn.
  • Compute and compare global feature importances using permutation importance.
  • Design a per-decision trace schema that includes inputs, model version and explanation artefacts.
  • Describe the production requirements for audit storage, access control and explanation stability monitoring.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Decision Traceability Logging System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it is an advanced topic combining ML, explainability and systems engineering; expect to design logging schemas, provenance tracking and privacy-aware retention rather than only model training.
What do I need to learn or have before starting?
Familiarity with Python, scikit-learn, model explanation tools (SHAP/permutation importance), basic database or object storage concepts, and privacy/retention principles will help you implement a robust system.
How should I evaluate progress and roughly how long will it take?
Evaluate by demonstrating trace completeness, reproducible explanation retrieval, and storage/provenance tests; a basic prototype can take 6–10 weeks, with extra time for production-quality storage, privacy policies and metrics.
