01 / THE IDEA

Data lineage visualization in practice.

Data lineage visualization maps datasets, transformations and model inputs so engineers and auditors can trace how a prediction was produced. Key concerns are authoritative provenance, correct edge direction, scale of the graph and the user interface for exploring upstream/downstream dependencies. Visual clutter, missing metadata and inconsistent identifiers are common failure modes.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: a dashboard for data engineers and auditors to inspect which tables, transformations and model inputs contributed to a decision. The dashboard should surface uncertainty and require a human reviewer before any operational decisions are made.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a data lineage visualization project
step by step.

01

Define lineage schema

Decide node and edge types (datasets, tables, transformations) and a stable identifier scheme to join provenance records.

02

Create a reproducible baseline

Build a minimal pipeline that ingests provenance rows and constructs a directed graph for a small set of models or pipelines.

03

Compute importance signals

Aggregate metrics such as access frequency, data drift or model-feature importance for nodes to highlight notable lineage paths.

04

Render and review

Display an interactive graph (zoom, filter, inspect node metadata) and collect reviewer annotations for disputed links.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the data lineage visualization starter actually does.

The supplied starter generates a synthetic classification dataset (sklearn.make_classification), fits a RandomForestClassifier, computes permutation feature importances on the test set, and prints the model score and a small importance table. It does not ingest provenance records, create lineage graphs, or produce visualisations of lineage.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
X, y = make_classification(n_samples=700, n_features=8, n_informative=5, random_state=42)
columns = [f"feature_{i}" for i in range(X.shape[1])]
X = pd.DataFrame(X, columns=columns)

X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y, test_size=0.25, random_state=42, stratify=y)
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
Important limitation

The starter uses synthetic tabular features and trains a RandomForest; it only computes permutation feature importances and prints a small report. It does not implement any data-lineage ingestion, graph construction, provenance metadata handling or visualization components required for a lineage system. The synthetic labels and features do not represent provenance relationships.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Minimal lineage dashboard prototype

Proposed extension: replace synthetic input with exported provenance rows (dataset id, job id, timestamp, operation) and build a small dashboard that renders an interactive directed graph and highlights nodes by importance or drift.

WHO IT COULD SERVEData engineering and ML platform teams
FIRST MVPA small web UI that ingests exported provenance rows, constructs a directed graph for a given model, and lets users filter and inspect node metadata and importance scores.
KEY RISKIncorrect or incomplete provenance can mislead reviewers; visualised lineage must not be used as an authoritative decision without human validation. Validate identifiers and provide provenance confidence to prevent incorrect attributions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a data lineage visualization project puts on your resume.

  • Prepare and split tabular data reproducibly and document the schema choices for provenance records.
  • Fit a baseline classifier on synthetic data and compute permutation feature importance as an initial signal.
  • Design a minimal schema and pipeline to transform provenance rows into a directed graph for visualisation.
  • Plan a reviewer workflow so humans validate lineage edges before using the graph for operational decisions.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Data Lineage Visualization project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it’s an advanced final year project idea that combines data engineering, graph visualisation and explainability; expect substantial design and implementation work across backend and frontend components.
What should I learn or prepare before starting this project?
Familiarise yourself with data provenance concepts, graph data structures, Plotly or similar visualisation libraries, Python data pipelines, and practices for maintaining consistent identifiers and metadata.
How can I evaluate progress and estimate time required?
Evaluate by building core components iteratively: a metadata model and provenance capture, a scalable graph backend, and an interactive UI; a minimum viable prototype can take 6–12 weeks depending on scope and team size.
