01 / THE IDEA

Contextual Entity Linking in practice.

Contextual entity linking maps textual mentions to canonical entities in a knowledge base using surrounding context to disambiguate similar names. Important error cases include ambiguous mentions, missing candidate entities, coreference chains, and domain-specific surface forms.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed application: enrich enterprise documents by linking mentions to an internal knowledge base so downstream search or summarisation can retrieve canonical records; a human reviewer should validate links before any automated downstream action.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a contextual entity linking project
step by step.

01

Assemble labelled examples

Collect documents where mentions are annotated with canonical entity IDs and include ambiguous and out-of-KB mentions for robust evaluation.

02

Generate candidate entities

Build surface-form and alias lookups (and optionally a dense retrieval index) to propose a small candidate set per mention.

03

Score candidates with context

Train a contextual scorer using text around the mention (TF-IDF, transformer embeddings or cross-encoders) to rank candidates.

04

Evaluate and inspect errors

Measure accuracy and recall@k, then inspect false positives for ambiguous names, missing KB entries and coreference failures.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the contextual entity linking starter actually does.

The supplied starter loads six short, generic sentences with binary labels, splits them, fits a TF-IDF vectoriser + LogisticRegression pipeline, prints a classification report on the test split and shows a single sample prediction. It does not implement mention detection, candidate generation, or linking to any knowledge base.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
Important limitation

The starter code is a small binary-text classifier on six hand-written sentences; it does not perform any entity mention detection, candidate generation, knowledge-base lookup, or contextual ranking required for entity linking. The dataset is tiny, unlabelled for entities, and unsuitable for evaluating linking performance.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Prototype contextual linker

A proposed extension: replace the toy sentences with a small annotated dataset of mentions linked to entity IDs, implement candidate generation via alias tables or dense retrieval, and train a contextual scoring model (bi-encoder or cross-encoder) to rank candidates.

WHO IT COULD SERVEEnterprise search teams
FIRST MVPA REST API that accepts text and mention spans, returns top-k candidate entity IDs with confidence scores and an interface for human verification.
KEY RISKIncorrect links can mislead users or downstream systems; keep a human-in-the-loop and do not use the prototype for autonomous decisions in sensitive contexts.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a contextual entity linking project puts on your resume.

  • Distinguish mention detection, candidate generation and contextual scoring as separate pipeline stages.
  • Implement a baseline contextual scorer using TF-IDF or transformer embeddings and measure recall@k.
  • Inspect and categorise typical linking errors such as ambiguity, missing KB entries and coreference.
  • Explain why the supplied starter is unsuitable for entity linking and how to replace it with annotated data.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Contextual Entity Linking project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — this is an advanced NLP project idea that suits final year students comfortable with Python and NLP libraries; expect research and implementation work across indexing, retrieval and ranking.
What should I learn or have before starting this project?
Familiarity with Python, NLP (tokenisation, coreference basics), transformers, Hugging Face, spaCy, and knowledge-base concepts; also evaluation metrics and dataset curation skills.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate by building modules: mention detection, candidate generation, contextual encoder and ranking, using precision/recall and accuracy on annotated datasets; a basic prototype can take 2–4 months depending on scope and dataset preparation.
