01 / THE IDEA

Context-aware recommendation in practice.

Context-aware recommendation augments user–item interactions with situational signals such as time, device or location to improve relevance. Important issues include representing context, handling sparse signals, cold-start items and measuring ranking quality with precision@K, recall@K or NDCG.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed extension: personalise a streaming catalogue by favouring items that match a user’s current context (time of day, device type, recently viewed categories). Any live use should keep a human-in-the-loop for business rules and quality checks before automating decisions.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a context-aware recommendation system project
step by step.

01

Prepare interaction and context data

Collect or simulate user–item interactions and align contextual features (timestamp, device, location) at the event level, then split chronologically to avoid leakage.

02

Build a baseline model

Create a simple user-based or item-based collaborative filter as a reproducible baseline; avoid learning context into features until the baseline is understood.

03

Add context-aware signals

Experiment with context-aware score adjustments (time decay, context-conditioned embeddings or factorisation machines) and measure improvement on ranking metrics.

04

Evaluate and inspect failures

Report precision@K, recall@K and NDCG, and inspect cold-start and context-mismatch cases to guide feature and data-collection changes.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the context-aware recommendation system starter actually does.

The supplied starter constructs a small DataFrame of hand-written user–item ratings, pivots it into a user-item matrix, computes cosine similarity between users, finds the most similar user to a target, and recommends the top unseen items from that neighbour's ratings.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
matrix = ratings.pivot_table(index="user", columns="item", values="rating").fillna(0)
user_similarity = pd.DataFrame(
    cosine_similarity(matrix),
    index=matrix.index,
    columns=matrix.index,
)
Important limitation

The starter implements a plain user-based collaborative filter on a tiny synthetic ratings table and does not incorporate any context signals (time, device, location) or use ranking metrics. The dataset is too small to draw meaningful conclusions and there is no train/test split or evaluation code for offline ranking.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Context-aware Recommendation: a pilot extension

Proposed extension: replace the toy ratings with a timestamped event log and add context features (time of day, device type). Train a context-conditioned model or apply re-ranking rules that boost items matching current context.

WHO IT COULD SERVEE-commerce or streaming services
FIRST MVPAn API that ingests a user id plus simple context (time, device) and returns top-K recommendations by combining a collaborative baseline score with lightweight context-based re-weighting.
KEY RISKRecommendations can amplify popularity bias and perform poorly for cold-start users or items; human oversight of business rules and periodic manual review are required before using in production.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a context-aware recommendation system project puts on your resume.

  • Create a reproducible user–item rating matrix from event data and handle missing values.
  • Implement a simple user-based collaborative-filtering baseline using cosine similarity.
  • Design a plan to incorporate context signals (time, device, location) into scoring or re-ranking.
  • Define evaluation using ranking metrics such as precision@K, recall@K and NDCG and inspect common failure modes.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Context-Aware Recommendation System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it’s a suitable applied final year project for CSE students who can extend a basic recommender to incorporate contextual signals and evaluation metrics.
What skills and tools will I need?
Familiarity with Python, pandas and scikit-learn is required, plus knowledge of recommender basics, feature engineering for context, and ranking metrics like precision@K and NDCG.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by implementing baseline collaborative filtering, add context-aware features and compare with ranking metrics; expect several weeks to a few months depending on dataset size and depth.
