01 / THE IDEA

Conditional text generation in practice.

Conditional text generation trains a model to produce text that satisfies an explicit condition such as a prompt, desired tone, target audience or structured control variables. Key challenges include preserving factuality, avoiding harmful content, handling ambiguous or underspecified prompts, and evaluating generation quality with both automatic and human-centred metrics.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A possible application: a drafting assistant that creates policy summaries in a requested tone (formal, brief or explanatory). In deployment, a human reviewer should approve or edit generated outputs; this starter does not produce conditioned text and must be extended to train a generative model.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a conditional text generation project
step by step.

01

Define conditioning variables

Decide the concrete controls you need (prompt templates, tone labels, sections to include) and collect examples annotated with those conditions.

02

Prepare training data

Create paired (condition, target text) records, clean HTML/markup, remove PII and split chronologically if needed for realistic evaluation.

03

Build a baseline generator

Fine-tune a small encoder–decoder or causal transformer on the paired data and expose the condition as a prompt prefix or special token.

04

Evaluate and monitor

Report perplexity, BLEU/ROUGE for structured tasks, and run human preference checks for tone and factuality; add filters and human-in-the-loop checks for safety.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the conditional text generation starter actually does.

The supplied starter implements a binary text classifier. It vectorises six short example sentences with TF-IDF, fits a LogisticRegression pipeline, prints a classification report on a tiny test split, and shows a single sample prediction for a prompt string. It does not implement conditional text generation, does not train or fine-tune any generative model, nor does it produce generated text beyond a classifier prediction.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)

model.fit(X_train, y_train)
Important limitation

The code trains a TF-IDF + LogisticRegression classifier on six hand-written sentences with binary labels and uses it to predict a label for a prompt; it is not a conditional generator. The dataset is far too small and not paired (condition, target) data, so it cannot validate conditional generation behaviour or quality.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Conditional generator: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: collect paired examples of (condition, target text) such as summaries with tone labels, then fine-tune a small transformer to generate text conditioned on the requested tone or prompt template, with a safety filter and human review step before publishing outputs.

WHO IT COULD SERVEContent teams and documentation authors
FIRST MVPA small API that accepts a prompt plus a tone label and returns a generated draft along with a confidence score and an edit-log for human reviewers.
KEY RISKGenerative models can hallucinate facts, produce biased or unsafe text, or fail to respect confidential inputs; keep a human reviewer in the loop and do not use the prototype for critical clinical, legal or financial decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a conditional text generation project puts on your resume.

  • Describe the conditional generation task and choose concrete conditioning variables for a dataset.
  • Prepare paired (condition, target) training data and split it to mimic deployment drift.
  • Fine-tune or prompt a transformer-based generator and evaluate with perplexity and human preference tests.
  • Explain this starter's limitation: it is a TF-IDF classifier on six examples and does not implement conditional generation.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Conditional Text Generation project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project for CSE or engineering students?
Yes — it’s a substantial applied topic combining deep learning, NLP and evaluation; scope can be adjusted from prototyping to full system work depending on time and ambition.
What skills and tools should I learn before starting?
Familiarity with Python, PyTorch, transformers (Hugging Face), tokenisation, and basic ML evaluation; background in NLP concepts like prompting, conditional modelling and safety best practices helps.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start by building baselines and controlled experiments: data prep, fine-tuning or prompting, and automatic/human evaluation; a focused prototype typically takes 2–4 months of part-time work.
