Define inputs and target
Decide which activities and units are required (kWh, km, kg) and whether the target is total CO2e or per-unit intensity.
Estimate carbon footprints. Report model uncertainty.
A carbon footprint calculator maps activity inputs (energy use, travel, materials) to an emissions estimate. Typical designs treat this as a regression problem, require clear units, and must handle missing or aggregated inputs and equity considerations when used for recommendations.

A carbon footprint calculator maps activity inputs (energy use, travel, materials) to an emissions estimate. Typical designs treat this as a regression problem, require clear units, and must handle missing or aggregated inputs and equity considerations when used for recommendations.
A proposed application: a dashboard that helps small businesses estimate emissions from invoices and travel, with a human reviewer validating high-impact cases before recommendations are shown. This project is a prototype concept and the supplied starter code does not provide a deployable emissions model.
Decide which activities and units are required (kWh, km, kg) and whether the target is total CO2e or per-unit intensity.
Collect or synthesise records with realistic features and emission labels, and explicitly document units and conversion factors.
Fit a simple regression baseline (for example, linear regression or tree models) and record calibration and prediction intervals.
Measure RMSE and coverage of prediction intervals, inspect high-error cases, and ensure a human reviewer is in the loop for operational use.
The supplied starter generates a synthetic binary classification dataset with sklearn.make_classification, splits it, builds a Pipeline with StandardScaler and RandomForestClassifier, fits the model and prints a classification report. It does not use carbon or emissions data, nor does it implement a regression-based footprint calculator.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)The code trains a RandomForestClassifier on synthetic classification data. A carbon-footprint calculator is normally a regression or structured-estimation task using real activity-to-emission mappings; the starter's binary labels and artificial features do not validate emissions estimates or real-world performance.
Proposed extension: replace synthetic data with labelled records that map metered activity (kWh, km, materials) to measured or estimated CO2e, train a calibrated regression model, and add prediction intervals and a review workflow for high-impact cases.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
