Autonomous drone navigation. Balance exploration and exploitation.
Autonomous drone navigation uses a defined state, action space and reward signal to learn policies that steer a vehicle safely and efficiently. Key issues include partial observability, sensor noise, safe exploration, and handling edge-case failures such as obstacle collisions and GPS loss.

Autonomous drone navigation uses a defined state, action space and reward signal to learn policies that steer a vehicle safely and efficiently. Key issues include partial observability, sensor noise, safe exploration, and handling edge-case failures such as obstacle collisions and GPS loss.
A proposed application is an inspection-assistant for industrial sites that suggests safe navigation paths while a human pilot retains final control. Because physical safety is involved, the human reviewer must remain in charge and this project is not a deployed safety system.
Write a clear state representation, action set and reward function; choose a simulator or logged flight data for reproducible experiments.
Start with a simple baseline—e.g. a scripted or bandit policy—and measure returns before moving to value- or policy-based agents.
Run multiple seeds, track average return and failure modes, and measure safety violations such as proximity breaches or collisions.
Wrap policies with safety constraints, manual override hooks and telemetry; perform staged tests from simulation to bench to flight.
The supplied starter implements a 4-armed bandit simulation using an epsilon-greedy strategy. It initialises four true reward rates, selects actions by epsilon exploration or greedy exploitation, updates sample-average estimates online, and prints action counts, estimated rewards and total reward. It does not implement an environment, state, sensors, or any navigation policy for drones.
for step in range(1, 2001):
if rng.random() < epsilon:
action = rng.integers(len(true_reward_rates))
else:
action = int(np.argmax(estimated_values))
The starter is a simple multi-armed bandit (epsilon-greedy) simulation and contains no state, observations, dynamics, sensors or control actions relevant to drone navigation. It cannot be used to assess navigation policies, collision risk, or real-world performance.
A proposed extension is to connect the project to a drone simulator (for example Gymnasium-compatible environments or AirSim), implement a stateful observation space, and train a value-based or policy-gradient agent with safety constraints and manual override.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
