Prepare simulation traces
Collect simulator or logged robot trajectories with varying payloads and disturbances; align states, actions and timestamps and hold out sequences for validation.
Adapt control to uncertain dynamics. Estimate model mismatch.
Adaptive control reduces performance loss when robot dynamics differ from the nominal model by adjusting controller parameters online or by estimating unmodelled disturbances. Key challenges include identifiability of model errors, stability under adaptation, sensor noise and safe exploration in the presence of actuator limits.

Key challenges include identifiability of model errors, stability under adaptation, sensor noise and safe exploration in the presence of actuator limits.
A proposed use: a simulation-backed controller that adapts to payload changes or unmodelled friction while a human supervisor reviews adaptation logs. This prototype is intended for research and lab validation only and must not be used to make real-world control decisions without formal verification.

Implement a nominal controller (e.g. PID or LQR) and a simple adaptive law (gain tuning or model-parameter update) that runs in closed loop in simulation.
Measure tracking error, overshoot, control effort and stability margins across disturbance scenarios and report worst-case behaviour.
Add bounds on parameter updates, fall-back to nominal controllers, monitoring and a human-in-the-loop override before any hardware tests.
The supplied starter implements a grid-based A* path planner on a small 2D map: it locates start and goal cells, expands neighbours with Manhattan heuristic, reconstructs the discrete path and prints the planned path and its length. It does not simulate dynamics, learn parameters or perform any adaptive control computations.
while frontier:
_, current = heapq.heappop(frontier)
if current == goal:
break
for nxt in neighbors(current):
new_cost = cost_so_far[current] + 1
if nxt not in cost_so_far or new_cost < cost_so_far[nxt]:
cost_so_far[nxt] = new_cost
priority = new_cost + heuristic(nxt, goal)
heapq.heappush(frontier, (priority, nxt))
came_from[nxt] = currentThe starter code is a discrete A* path planner on a static grid and contains no dynamics model, no controller, no adaptation law and no sensor/actuator noise. It cannot evaluate or demonstrate adaptive control behaviour or robustness to uncertain continuous dynamics.
A proposed extension: replace the grid example with a simulated robot and traces, implement a nominal controller plus an online parameter estimator or disturbance observer, and evaluate adaptation on held-out disturbance scenarios.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
