01 / THE IDEA

Actor-Critic Implementation in practice.

Actor-critic methods combine a parameterised policy (actor) with a value function (critic) to learn decisions from reward feedback. Practical risks include unstable learning, credit assignment over long horizons and sensitivity to reward shaping.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A proposed classroom pilot: train an actor-critic agent in a simple Gym environment to compare stability and sample efficiency against baseline policy-gradient or value-based agents. For any real control or safety-critical use, keep a human reviewer in the loop and avoid automated deployment.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a actor-critic methods project
step by step.

01

Define the task and environment

Choose a Gymnasium environment, define states, actions, reward shaping and episode termination rules before training.

02

Implement actor and critic

Build separate function approximators (neural networks) for the policy and the value estimate and connect them in a training loop.

03

Train with stability checks

Log reward curves, policy entropy and critic loss across random seeds and tune learning rates and advantage normalisation.

04

Evaluate and inspect failures

Measure average episodic return, variance, and failure modes such as reward hacking, divergence or brittle behaviour under perturbations.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the actor-critic methods starter actually does.

The supplied starter implements a simple epsilon-greedy multi-armed bandit learner: it simulates four Bernoulli arms, selects actions with an epsilon-exploration policy, updates sample-average estimates for each arm, and prints action counts, estimated rates and total reward. It does not implement an actor network, a critic/value approximator, policy gradients, or interaction with a Gym environment.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
for step in range(1, 2001):
    if rng.random() < epsilon:
        action = rng.integers(len(true_reward_rates))
    else:
        action = int(np.argmax(estimated_values))

    reward = 1 if rng.random() < true_reward_rates[action] else 0
    action_counts[action] += 1
    total_reward += reward
    estimated_values[action] += (reward - estimated_values[action]) / action_counts[action]
Important limitation

The code is a bandit simulation using sample-average value estimates and epsilon-greedy action selection. It lacks any actor (policy parameterisation) and critic (value network) components, no neural networks or bootstrapped returns are present, and there is no episodic environment or state representation required by actor-critic algorithms.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Actor-Critic: a proposed classroom pilot

Proposed extension: replace the bandit loop with an agent that interacts with a Gym environment, implement separate actor and critic networks (e.g. small MLPs), train with an advantage estimator and log reward curves across multiple seeds.

WHO IT COULD SERVERL students and instructors
FIRST MVPA reproducible notebook that trains an actor-critic agent on a simple Gym environment, logs episodic returns and critic loss, and exposes checkpoints for inspection.
KEY RISKActor-critic training can diverge or overfit to reward-shaping; for any safety-critical or real-world control application, keep a human reviewer in charge and do not rely on the prototype for automated decisions.

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a actor-critic methods project puts on your resume.

  • Explain the actor-critic concept and why a separate policy and value function are used.
  • Replace the bandit simulation with an environment loop that collects state, action, reward, next state and done tuples.
  • Implement simple actor and critic networks and train them with an advantage-based update rule.
  • Log and interpret reward curves, critic loss and policy entropy to diagnose stability issues.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Actor-Critic Methods project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — Actor-Critic Methods are a solid applied final year project topic in reinforcement learning; you can extend theory into experiments and environments beyond the starter code.
What skills and tools will I need to complete it?
Familiarity with Python, NumPy, Gymnasium (or similar), RL fundamentals (policy gradients, value functions), and debugging unstable training runs will be important.
How should I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Start with bandit baselines, implement actor-critic algorithms, and compare performance across environments; expect several weeks to a few months depending on scope and experiments.
