Prepare the data
Prepare a documented dataset with at least three classes and a stratified holdout.
Distinguish several classes. Inspect the rare ones.
Multiclass classification selects one label from several mutually exclusive categories. Per-class errors and macro averages reveal failures hidden by overall accuracy.

A possible application for ml instructors: Help students compare category classifiers on a controlled teaching dataset. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.
Prepare a documented dataset with at least three classes and a stratified holdout.
Fit a multiclass baseline and preserve the mapping between class labels and probability columns.
Report macro F1, per-class recall and a labelled confusion matrix, including rare classes.
Show the predicted category and alternatives with an explicit uncertain-case review path.
The supplied starter creates 800 synthetic binary-classification rows with ten numeric features. It makes a stratified train/test split, fits a scaled RandomForestClassifier pipeline and prints a classification report.
model = Pipeline(
steps=[
("scale", StandardScaler()),
("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(
n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions))The source’s make_classification call uses the default two classes, not a multiclass task. Synthetic binary classification does not establish performance on the proposed application. The source report uses one split; it supplies no deployment or real-world validation.
Proposed extension: Help students compare category classifiers on a controlled teaching dataset.
This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.
