01 / THE IDEA

Document Clustering in practice.

Document clustering groups texts without predefined categories. Text representation, duplicate documents and cluster stability influence whether the groups are useful for browsing.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A possible application for research teams: Help a research team browse a permitted collection of technical notes. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a document clustering system project
step by step.

01

Prepare the data

Collect a licensed document set, remove duplicates and minimise private text.

02

Build the experiment

Compare TF-IDF plus K-means with a simple similarity-based grouping baseline.

03

Evaluate the result

Inspect representative documents, cluster sizes and stability across seeds with human topic review.

04

Define a reviewable output

Offer editable group labels and a way to move incorrectly grouped documents.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the document clustering system starter actually does.

The supplied starter splits six hand-written sentences with binary labels, fits a TF-IDF unigram/bigram vectoriser and LogisticRegression pipeline, then prints a report and one sample prediction.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("tfidf", TfidfVectorizer(ngram_range=(1, 2), min_df=1)),
        ("classifier", LogisticRegression(max_iter=1000)),
    ]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions, zero_division=0))
Important limitation

The source uses supervised binary logistic regression, not unsupervised document clustering. A two-example test set cannot support useful performance claims. The sentences are not a representative corpus, and their binary labels do not establish the richer task described in the project title.

04 / BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Where a document clustering system project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Document Clustering: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: Help a research team browse a permitted collection of technical notes.

WHO IT COULD SERVEResearch teams
FIRST MVPOffer editable group labels and a way to move incorrectly grouped documents.
KEY RISKPrivate-document exposure and misleading topic labels

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a document clustering system project puts on your resume.

  • Compare TF-IDF plus K-means with a simple similarity-based grouping baseline.
  • Inspect representative documents, cluster sizes and stability across seeds with human topic review.
  • Offer editable group labels and a way to move incorrectly grouped documents.
  • Explain this limitation: The source uses supervised binary logistic regression, not unsupervised document clustering.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Document Clustering System project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — it fits an intermediate final year project: you can explore unsupervised techniques, evaluation and applications like topic browsing or duplicate detection.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
Familiarise yourself with text preprocessing, TF-IDF/embeddings, clustering algorithms (K-Means, Agglomerative, DBSCAN), and Python tools such as scikit-learn and gensim; datasets and evaluation metrics are also needed.
How can I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate using intrinsic metrics (silhouette, Davies–Bouldin), stability tests, and qualitative inspection on labelled or synthetic data; a focused implementation and experiments can take 6–12 weeks depending on scope.
