01 / THE IDEA

Association Rule Mining in practice.

Association rules describe items frequently observed together. Support, confidence and lift help distinguish common products from combinations that occur more often than expected.

Real-world use case · Proposed extension

A possible application for independent retailers: Help independent shops consider shelf arrangements using aggregate basket patterns. This extension is not delivered by the supplied starter.

02 / THE BUILD

How to build a association rule mining project
step by step.

01

Prepare the data

Encode anonymised transactions as item-presence rows without customer identifiers.

02

Build the experiment

Mine frequent itemsets and derive rules with explicit support and confidence thresholds.

03

Evaluate the result

Inspect lift, transaction counts and rule stability on a later transaction period.

04

Define a reviewable output

Show a small reviewed rule list with counts and no causal claims.

03 / SOURCE SNAPSHOT

What the association rule mining starter actually does.

The supplied starter creates 800 synthetic binary-classification rows with ten numeric features. It makes a stratified train/test split, fits a scaled RandomForestClassifier pipeline and prints a classification report.

SOURCE EXCERPTPython
model = Pipeline(
    steps=[
        ("scale", StandardScaler()),
        ("classifier", RandomForestClassifier(
            n_estimators=250, random_state=RANDOM_STATE)),
    ]
)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
print(classification_report(y_test, predictions))
Important limitation

The source contains no transaction baskets, itemsets or association rules. Synthetic binary classification does not establish performance on the proposed application. The source report uses one split; it supplies no deployment or real-world validation.

Where a association rule mining project could go next.

PROPOSED BUSINESS CONCEPT

Association Rule Mining: a pilot concept

Proposed extension: Help independent shops consider shelf arrangements using aggregate basket patterns.

WHO IT COULD SERVEIndependent retailers
FIRST MVPShow a small reviewed rule list with counts and no causal claims.
KEY RISKSpurious rules from rare combinations

This is a potential application pathway, not a delivered product. The supplied starter does not implement this service or validate it with real users.

05 / WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

What a association rule mining project puts on your resume.

  • Mine frequent itemsets and derive rules with explicit support and confidence thresholds.
  • Inspect lift, transaction counts and rule stability on a later transaction period.
  • Show a small reviewed rule list with counts and no causal claims.
  • Explain this limitation: The source contains no transaction baskets, itemsets or association rules.

06 / QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

Association Rule Mining project FAQs.

Is this suitable as a final year project?
Yes — as a beginner-level ML topic it’s appropriate for a final year project; scope can be extended with real retail or web-log transaction datasets and evaluation of metrics.
What should I learn or prepare before starting?
Get comfortable with Python, pandas for data wrangling and the mlxtend library for frequent itemset and rule generation; understand support, confidence and lift and how to represent transactions.
How do I evaluate progress and how long will it take?
Evaluate by generating plausible itemsets and rules, measuring metrics and testing on multiple datasets; a basic implementation and analysis can take 3–6 weeks, longer if adding optimisation or real-world datasets.
